Today american golf occupies the number one position in Europe as the leader in specialist golf retailing.
The very first ‘store’, which opened for business was in fact a garden shed purchased for £36 by Howard and Robert Bilton. It was situated at the Ashton in Makerfield golf club where they worked. This shed was the beginning of american golf.
Howard and Robert expanded their business slowly but surely, forming a company called Bilton Golf Promotions in 1978, the forerunner for american golf.
In 1981 they purchased their first shop on Manchester Road, Warrington, the previous owner had called his business ‘american golf’, this title was incorporated into the new trading name of American Golf Discount Centre Limited.
american golf now has 70 stores across the UK and Eire and on the internet at www.americangolf.co.uk.
In 1996 american golf opened a new Head Office and Distribution Centre at the Gemini Business Park in Warrington, Cheshire with 30,000 sq ft of office and distribution space. The Head Office continues to be situated at this site today.
In 2004 a new era began for the business and the brand when the original owners sold their majority stake in the business to the new Management team backed by Lloyds Development Capital.
