Tiger Woods returns with solid opening round

It might not have been vintage Tiger, but the first round of the Hero World Challenge proved the 14-time major winner still has plenty left in the tank – with lots to build on going forward.

There was an electric atmosphere at the first tee of the Hero World Challenge when Tiger Woods took to the greens. And despite being in a superstar-laden line up, the capacity crowd were only here for one man. After a fourth back surgery and nearly a year away from the sport, Tiger was back.

Of course there was some trepidation. This story has played out before. Just a year ago, in fact. Woods was unable to finish his round, and a ten-month layoff followed. Would the same happen again?

For now the answer seems to be no. As it turns out, Tiger played some surprisingly good golf. It was a bit of a roller coaster out there, but significantly more ups than downs along the way.

Woods got through the full 18 holes without a noticeable wince or grimace.

“It was not only nice to get the first round out of the way, but also I’m only three shots out of the lead,” said Woods, who hit seven fairways, 12 greens and needed 28 putts. “So, to be able to put myself there after not playing for — is it 10 months or so? — in the neighbourhood of that, it was nice to feel the adrenaline out there.”
