Azinger disqualified for using wrong ballMonday 29 Jun, 2009 01:00:00
The victorious US Ryder Cup captain for 2008 Paul Azinger was disqualified from the Travelers Championship last week for using the wrong golf equipment.
He was unable to return for Friday's second round after it emerged that his Callaway ball was non-conforming.
Having won the tournament twice under its previous name, the Greater Hartford Open, the veteran player Azinger was looking to roll back the years over the weekend - but he ended up packing his bags early and going home.
Explaining why his golf ball was not legal, director of rules official Mark Russell told the Hartford Courant: 'It had been taken off the list the first Wednesday this month. The labelling on the ball was not on the conforming ball list.'
Azinger's two-under-par 68 on Thursday was his last action on the PGA Tour because the man who led the US to a 16.5-11.5 victory over Europe in last year's Ryder Cup has decided to retire from the competition.
