Joburg Open 'a new-generation event'
Thursday 08 Jan, 2009 10:23:49
The Joburg Open starts today in Johannesburg, South Africa, with one golf industry expert describing the tournament as being part of the game's 'new generation'.
In many ways, the competition at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club provides a 'break from the past', according to easyGolf chief executive officer Leon Plutsick.
Despite the event only being three years old in 2009, it does also stay true to a number of the finest golfing traditions.
'The Joburg Open was conceived to take the game to a wider audience,' explained Mr Plutsick. 'It would do this, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and the Province of Gauteng, by creating a broad sense of ownership of the tournament.'
Retief Goosen and Richard Sterne are two of the most well-known players taking part in this week's tournament.
Sterne will achieve a rare hat-trick of wins if he finishes on top of the leaderboard at the end of play on Sunday, having already claimed the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the South African Open Championship titles in recent weeks.
