McIlroy named European Tour Golfer of the Month for May
Rory McIlroy has claimed another award following his victory in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after being named Race to Dubai European Golfer of the Month for May.
The award was given to the Northern Irishman for his display at Wentworth, in which he came from seven shots back heading into the final round to make a remarkable recovery and win by one shot from Ireland’s Shane Lowry.
Closing off with a round of 66, McIlroy moved to second place in the 2014 Race to Dubai after clinching a first professional victory on European soil and sixth European Tout title overall.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McIlroy said: "Winning the European Tour's flagship event was something very special.
"My first victory on European soil is a really important and welcome addition to my career titles to date.
"The European Tour has always been good to me, and this win really cements the great relationship we enjoy.
"To have won the BMW PGA Championship, and with it the Golfer of the Month award, is the coming together of some really good, recent form. Hopefully the win will be the start of a big season's golf for me."
McIlroy will now have his sights set on competing in the US Open, which kicks off on Thursday, June 12. You can follow all the latest news and developments from the second major of the year, as well as everything going on in the golfing world, right here at american golf.
