Phil Mickelson loses his (club) head at the Valero Texas Open
The 12th hole at the Valero Texas Open had been causing players problems all week.
Eventual winner Jimmy Walker had to dig with his bare hands to find his ball in the fairway bunker during round three but five-time major winner Phil Mickelson had an even more unusual visit.
After chaining his mind about which club to use, Mickelson was then troubled by an awkward stance with the ball beneath his feet.
Usually one of the best in the business when it comes to sand escapes, Mickelson was then left bemused as his club-head nearly went as far as the ball after making contact with the sand.
“What the heck?” was the initial reaction and the look on Mickelson’s face said it all afterwards.
He went straight into his bag and pulled out his mobile phone to request a replacement.
