Rory McIlroy nearly hit by Emiliano Grillo’s drive

Rory McIlroy was inches away from being seriously injured after a ball nearly hit him during his third round of the Frys.com Open.

The former world number one was on the side of the 17th green when a ball came flying towards him, landing right by his feet.

McIlroy and playing partner Brendan Steele were confused as to where the ball had come from until it transpired eventual winner Emiliano Grillo had fired at the green after being told it was clear.

In Grillo’s defence, the green on the drivable par-4 is not visible from the tee and the 23-year-old Argentinian has be told it was safe to play.

“Would have put me out of my misery,” McIlroy joked as another frustrating round with the putter left him out of contention. He eventually finished in a tie for 26th, six shot behind Grillo and Kevin Na who battled it out in a play-off.

“Big confusion on the 17th tee today, my apologies to @McIlroyRory #GuyIsStrongTho” Grillo posted on Twitter.

He later added: “Wow... I just saw the replay of the 17th. That was really close.

“It was 3 players, 3 caddies + scorers and marshals and we all agreed we were good to go. Big surprise for everybody.”
