Ryder Cup 2014: Europe leads USA 5-3 after day one

It was all smiles for Europe as they overcame a tough USA team to win 5-3 in the first day’s foursomes.

Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia’s halved match – with two down and two to play – was the only thing preventing Europe from a clean sweep in what turned into a commanding display from the hosts.

Debutant Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood put in a great shift as they went two up on the final green, while Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson came through their game as 2&1 winners.

Victor Dubuisson, who was also making his first appearance in a Ryder Cup, was teamed with the experienced Graeme McDowell, and the duo played some excellent golf to register a wonderful 3&2 victory.
