WATCH: Jim Furyk shoots 58 for lowest round in PGA Tour history

Take a moment to digest this – Jim Furyk, at the age of 46, shot a 12-under 58 to make PGA Tour history.

The Ryder Cup veteran had to shoot a 66 to make the cut on the number at the Travelers Championship, two days later he improved on that by eight shots.

In amongst the madness there was a hole out from 135 yards at the 3rd, a front nine of 27, seven straight birdies around the turn and he actually had a putt for a 57 at TPC River Highlands’ last hole.

The 46-year-old was already one of six men to have broken 60 with his 59 at the BMW Championship in 2013 and this was even more silly.

“A million and a half rounds played in the history of the PGA Tour and you look at the great names ahead of me. It’s humbling, to stand alone at 58 is really a cool accomplishment,” the American said.

“I never thought I’d have the opportunity to shoot 59 so once we accomplished that goal I said, ‘I had my one chance, I was able to go ahead and birdie the last hole and do it, it’ll probably never happen again’, and lo and behold, I made the turn today and said, ‘here we go again’. It’s fun to break that barrier and be the first one.”

After 12 holes he was a ridiculous 11 under which left him needing six pars to break the magical 60 barrier.

At the turn he said his main problem was to keep the mind as quiet as possible.

“I’m hitting it well, I’m putting it well, it’s trying to find a way to stay out of your own way really,” he said. “And don’t let any thoughts leak in.”

He then saw a 10-footer horseshoe out at 15, did add another birdie from 24 feet at the next and had a putt of a similar distance to sign off with a 67. As it was the 58 was rounded off with a putt of just 18 inches.
