WITB Matt Fitzpatrick - Omega European Masters

Matt Fitzpatrick is a free agent when it comes to his golf clubs. So what does he choose? Equipment editor James Savage takes a look. Matt Fitzpatrick doesn’t have a golf club deal but has been playing Ping irons ever since he turned pro.

He’s also been a Titleist Vokey wedges and Titleist Pro V1x man for some time. But there have been a few changes at the top end of Fitzpatrick’s bag in recent years.

He was a Callaway Big Bertha Alpha driver user when he burst on to the pro scene with his victory at the 2015 British Masters at Woburn.

But when he claimed his biggest win to date – the 2016 DP World Tour Championship – he had just switched to the TaylorMade M2 Driver.

That was the 2016 model of the M2 but he’s now moved into the 2017 TaylorMade M2 Driver as used by dozens of tour pros including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose.

He has also switched into a new Ping G400 Fairway Wood .

But when it comes to his irons he’s been reluctant to make a change with a mixture of the i25 and S55 models – both which are a good few years old now. It’s surprising that Fitzpatrick hasn’t been signed up on to a full contract with any golf club manufacturer.

He’s 23-years-old and already has a US Amateur victory, four European Tour wins and a Ryder Cup appearance to his name.

Like Jordan Spieth, he was snapped up very early by Under Armour so maybe doesn’t need the cash from a 14-club deal and is happy to switch gear whenever he wants.

Fitzpatrick wears shoes which look similar to Jordan’s ‘Spieth One’ model.

Cub deal or not, Fitzpatrick looks set for a stellar career and has made a great start to making Thomas Bjorn’s Ryder Cup team for Le Golf National in 2018.
