New golf equipment rules established
Wednesday 06 Aug, 2008 01:14:52
New rules introduced by golfing body The R&A are set to "significantly increase the spin differential" between fairway shots and shots from the rough.
According to the organisation, the changes will see the groove volume and groove-edge sharpness limited on clubs.
This will affect all types of club except drivers and putters and has been incorporated to enhance the benefits of accurate golf.
Once fully integrated, players will find hitting out of the rough an altogether more difficult prospect than it currently is.
Dr Stephen Otto, The R&A's director of research and testing, said: "Contributions from golf club manufacturers in particular have been considerable and they have welcomed the opportunity to be involved in the process."
He added that governing bodies and players have been involved in the research, while laboratory tests have taken place.
The R&A's rules will stand for every club made after January 2010.
Last month, two-time Open Championship winner Padraig Harrington teamed up with the rule maker to promote good etiquette in golf. A video has been created for the organisation's website.
