Ogilvy wins by six shots
Monday 12 Jan, 2009 10:25:21
Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy claimed the first PGA Tour title of the 2009 season yesterday.
The Australian PGA Championship winner from last month emerged triumphant at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii by finishing six strokes clear of Anthony Kim and Davis Love III.
Ogilvy led by six shots going into the final day, but halfway through the round he was just one stroke clear.
The 31-year-old recovered his composure to stretch his lead and play out an impressive back nine to take the title.
'I had never had a six-shot lead before. That's quite an uncomfortable feeling really,' the player explained. 'I enjoyed the last 2.5 hours more than I enjoyed the first two.'
Sean O'Hair and Justin Leonard made up the top five after they carded 17 under par and 16 under par respectively.
Pre-tournament favourite Vijay Singh finished joint-27th position alongside last year's Mercedes-Benz Championship winner Daniel Chopra.
