Tony Finau could miss Masters tournament after bizarre injury

Tony Finau will make a call on whether to play The Masters today after a scan revealed the player had dislocated his ankle on Wednesday while celebrating a hole-in-one at the Par-3 contest.

Finau took off down the fairway to rapturous applause from the crowd as his ball rolled into the hole, but then seemed to twist his ankle awkwardly. After trying to regain his feet, Finau collapsed a second time before popping his ankle back in place.

The American left the course immediately for an X-ray which revealed no break, giving him hope of a miracle start in his first Masters at 12:43 pm (17:43 BST) alongside Bernhard Langer and Tony Ikeda. The incident lit up Twitter, filling his feed with messages of support. He replied: “Crazy day. Thanks for thoughts of concern, messages and prayers from all. I’m optimistic.”
