It’s all go for January after the R&A and USGA published their finalised Rules of Golf. So what’s coming in? Steve Carroll outlines the changes.
Bubba Watson wins Northern Open Trust using PING Golf clubs
Bubba Watson shot a seven-under-par final-round 64 to win by two shots in the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club in California using a selection of PING Golf clubs.
Bubba managed to edge out Dustin Johnson to finish 15 under as he claimed his first PGA Tour title since winning the US Masters event back in 2012.
Jason Allred and Brian Harman tied for third on 12 under, leaving their fellow American free to take the spoils. And there was little threat from Lee Westwood, whose recent parting of the ways from coach Sean Foley did little to ignite the Englishman’s game here as he shot a final round 71 to finish six under.
Bubba Watson began the day four strokes off the pace but quickly took control of the contest with five birdies in his first eight holes. He then finished the round in some style by rolling in a 14-foot birdie putt at the last to post a total score of 269.
Dustin Johnson led the chasing pack and was one of four players still holding a share of the lead during the final round, but closed his game with a five-birdie 66 for second place.
William McGirt, top of the leader board at start of play, had been in pursuit of a first PGA Tour title. He finished five shots off the pace with a 73.
South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel was the only golfer not to hail from the USA who held a place in the top-10. He eventually finished fifth on 11 under following a third successive 68.
Justin Rose was unable to make any statement of intent here as his game petered out with a 73 in his final round to finish one over, while a similar story unfolded for fellow Brits Ian Poulter and David Lynn, the pair shooting 72 and 74 respectively to finish one over.
