Cantlay hits the jackpot with playoff win in Vegas

Powered by National Club Golfer

What a few years it has been for Patrick Cantlay but the former number one amateur has made finally it into the PGA Tour winner’s circle after a sudden death play-off in Las Vegas.

The American was tipped for greatness after becoming the first amateur to shoot 60 on the PGA Tour but suffered a stress fracture in his back in 2013.

In a story Tiger Woods can surely relate to, he attempted a number of comebacks but kept breaking down.

Then in February 2016, his caddie and great friend, Chris Roth, was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

With a clean bill of health, Cantlay regained his PGA Tour card with a second-place finish at the Valspar Championship at the start of the 2017 season.

It sparked a run which has now seen him climb into the worlds top 50 and all the perks that brings – like playing in Masters in April.

Cantlay finished on -9 alongside Germany’s Alex Cejka and South Korean Whee Kim.

He had actually bogeyed the final two holes in regulation play but made an eight-foot bogey putt in the first hole of the play-off to stay alive.

On the second play-off hole, he carved his way out of tree trouble before putting from off the green to set up a tap-in par for victory.
