Bryson DeChambeau stormed through the field to edge past Patrick Rodgers at the John Deere Classic. Next stop; the Open Championship

Bryson DeChambeau came from four shots back to win the John Deere Classic by a shot from Patrick Rodgers. The unconventional American birdied four of the last six holes at TPC Deere Run, including this at the last, for a 65 and a place in the Open Championship.

Rodgers had a chance to tie his compatriot, having lipped out at the 17th, but his chip from behind the green just missed the hole. DeChambeau became the 10th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.

Afterwards he said: “I show everybody that `Look. There’s plenty of ways to do it.’ I do it my way and I feel comfortable doing it my way.”

Wesley Bryan (64) and Rick Lamb (66) tied for third and Steve Stricker (64) was part of a five-way tie for fifth. Stricker, a three-time winner on the bounce here from 2009, was tied for the lead before Rodgers got his final round underway. The 50-year-old was eight under after just 14 holes but then bogeyed the last.

“Realistically, if I could have made a couple more birdies there and could have got it to 18-under, who knows? Just couldn’t get it in there,” Stricker said.
