Gulbis Returns For Kraft Nabisco
Natalie Gulbis will return to play in the season's first golf major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club, after recovering from malaria.
Gulbis was infected by a mosquito and forced to withdraw after her first round in the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore because of what appeared to be flu-like symptoms. She hoped to return two weeks ago in Carlsbad at the Kia Classic, but was back in the doctor's office after a practice round.
"I got bitten in Thailand and got really sick," Gulbis said Wednesday. "The first couple of days they, fortunately or unfortunately, know exactly how to treat it because there have been cases before. They told me right away I'd be out about a month. I thought, for an athlete, that meant two weeks and I would be back.
"It definitely took longer and I'm grateful I had good doctors that knew how to treat me and I'm sitting here with a chance to play this week."
Gulbis has hardly lifted a club since Thailand having to take medications and IVs while being in and out of hospitals, the American said she is on no medication this week and feels better than she has in weeks.
