Matt Fitzpatrick inches away from a 59 on the European Tour

Powered by National Club Golfer

After shooting a 60 on the European Tour is should have been congratulations all-round for Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick.

However, when his birdie putt on 18 during round two of the KLM Open came up agonisingly short, he probably didn’t feel like celebrating.

No has ever shot a 59 on The European Tour but Fitzpatrick didn’t seem too unhappy with his efforts.

He wrote on Twitter afterwards: "Well worth the early start this morning then... Thanks for all the messages! Tomorrow’s a new day.”

If it was any consolation, the 59 wouldn’t have made it into the record books as preferred lies were in play.

The 21-year-old wasn’t able to follow-up his 60 with anything substantial over the weekend and finished in a tie for 30th.

But it has been a good season so far for the former US Amateur Champion with two top-three finishes in the last two months.
