Paul Casey, playing at the Irish Open on Thursday, birdied three straight holes in a four-under first-round as he bids to end a two-year winless run which now sees him at 169 in the world, as opposed to his previous world number 3 spot.
The 35-year-old battled his way into the US Open via the more difficult route, qualifying weeks earlier at the Walton Heath course in Surrey. "It was the first time ever I had to qualify for a US Open made me realise how precious they are playing in every one of the Majors," he said.
Many people would love to see Casey follow in the footsteps of his good friend and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the Irish Open and for the remainder of the season.
