Brooks Koepka put in a masterful performance to hold off a final round 63 from Tommy Fleetwood to successfully defend his US Open title at Shinnecock Hills.
Seve Trophy Captains Named
Team Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has named Sam Torrance and Jose Maria Olazabal as the captains for this year’s Seve Trophy presented by Golf+.
The formerly named Vivendi Seve Trophy is a Ryder Cup-style head-to-head match-play showdown between Great Britain & Ireland, and Continental Europe, and it will be played at St-Nom-La Bretèche Golf Club for the third time running.
Mustachioed Ryder Cup winning captain Torrance will lead GB & I, and the mastermind behind the Miracle at Medinah, Olazabal, will take charge of the Continental side. Paul McGinley trusts that they’ll do a sterling job: “I am delighted to name José María and Sam as captains,” said McGinley, who will have an overseeing role during the week at St-Nom-La Bretèche.
“They are two men I have the utmost respect for and who I’ve benefitted from over the years. I know they will do a fine job,” he added.
As ever the top five eligible world ranked players will make each side, and so too will the top five eligible players on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai who haven’t already qualified via the first criterion.
Team Europe skipper McGinley is looking forward to the week, and stressed the importance of the event: “I have said many times that this is a tournament close to my heart, both as a player and as a captain, and I am delighted that all the parties involved have worked so hard behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event will go ahead.
From a playing perspective in particular, it gives the players vital insight into the pressures associated with being part of a team and therefore having other guys depending on you.”
The tournament will be played from the 3rd October this year, and Continental Europe will be looking to wrestle the trophy back from GB & I’s hands.
