Brooks Koepka put in a masterful performance to hold off a final round 63 from Tommy Fleetwood to successfully defend his US Open title at Shinnecock Hills.
Webb Leads WGC Bridgestone Invitational
A scintillating display from Webb Simpson carded him a magnificent 64 to take the first round at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.
It was a fast and furious start from Simpson in Ohio which saw him end the day one shot in front of Open runner-up Henrik Stenson of Sweden.
One shot back is world number one Tiger Woods, defending champion Keegan Bradley, England’s Chris Wood and Ryan Moore, who all posted four-under 66’s.
Starting from the 10th, Simpson had gone to the turn in 31 with birdies at the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th, and also made it four birdies in succession when he picked up shots at the first and second.
An unfortunate bogey at the third monetarily threatened to derail his momentum, but the 2012 US Open champion battled back with further birdies at the sixth and seventh, and then followed up with a superb round that ended on a disappointing note with a bogey on the ninth.
