WITB: Brooks Koepka – U.S. Open Championship 2018

Check out which trusty Nike driving iron and new TaylorMade driver helped Brooks Koepka to become a double US Open champion.

It has been 12 months since his last victory (might as well save your best for the majors) so which new clubs have found their way into Brooks Koepka’s bag?

Not that many is the short answer.

Koepka is actually a free agent when it comes to his golf clubs so has a free run at all the equipment on the market.

He won his first US Open title the TaylorMade M2 driver but has since switched to the M3 – the same change made by Tiger Woods and dozens of other players.

Interestingly he puts both weights back to make the driver as forgiving as possible. This doesn’t make a huge amount of sense to me as you could just use the M4 if you want maximum forgiveness.

He is a double US Open champion though so feel free to take his word over mine.

His fairway wood is the exact same model he used at Erin Hills last year – the low-spinning TaylorMade M2 Tour.

It’s always interesting to see with non-contracted players (like Patrick Reed) how they often don’t switch into the very latest models.

So, when you hear manufacturers make outrageous claims about the distance of their new clubs, remember to take note of the clubs the players who aren’t being paid to use them are using.

There’s still the one Nike club in the bag which is a powerful Vapor Fly Pro driving iron.

I actually asked Koepka about this club at The Open at Royal Birkdale last year and he said he fell in love with it as soon as he it.

This club saw plenty of action off the tee at Shinnecock Hills and I’m sure we will see it at Carnoustie next month.

Then he moves into the Mizuno JPX900 Tour irons. Who was the last player to win a major using Mizuno irons?

Brooks Koepka. That’s right he’s using the exact same irons as were in play last year.

These irons have been an absolute hit on tour with dozens of non-contracted iron players like Ross Fisher as well as staff players such as Eddie Pepperell.

Before Koepka the previous Mizuno major winner was Todd Hamilton won The Open in 2004 using a set of Mizuno MP-33s.

Koepka – who was a Titleist staff player before moving to Nike – plays the new Vokey SM7 wedges.

And the best club for Koepka at Shinnecock Hills? There’s no doubt it was his Scotty Cameron Newport 2.

He plays the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball.
