World Matchplay to celebrate 50th anniversary in England
The World Matchplay will be returning to England for 2014 where it will celebrate its 50th anniversary, albeit not at the prestigious Wentworth course as many expected.
London Golf Club has been given the nod to host the tournament, which consists of a 16-man field split into four groups of four, from 15-19 October.
The £1.8m event’s return to England has delighted golfers, including Graeme McDowell, who said of the decision: "It is fantastic that the championship will be played in England for this special anniversary."
The Volvo Matchplay has been contested in Spain and Bulgaria recently, having not travelled to play on English soil since 2007. There were a few surprised faces when it was confirmed Wentworth would not be the host for the event, however London Golf Club is a great venue and should easily manage to create the same buzz of excitement come October.
The winner of the Volvo Matchplay will walk away with the prize of £540,000.
England will now be hosting three top attraction events this year: The Volvo Matchplay, The Open at Hoylake and the BMW Championship at Wentworth.
