AG News: Rose reclaims #1 ranking after Turkish Open win
Justin Rose soared back to the top of the world rankings after edging out Haotong Li in a thrilling finish at the Turkish Airlines Open.
Bae Sang-moon wrapped up victory in California on Sunday by two shots to claim his second PGA Tour title at the Frys.com Open.
An indifference in form for the South Korean this season, who failed to register a single top-10 finish between his maiden victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship last May, was finally put to bed following his strong display in the sunny California sunshine.
Bae produced a 70 over for the first time in the week after playing the final round with a one-over par 73, but he was able to keep Australia’s Steven Bowditch at arm’s length after coming into the final round with a four-shot lead.
"I was very frustrated," 28-year-old Bae told pgatour.com. "Even though my game was good, the score wasn't. I was very frustrated and I was very anxious and nervous."
Bae seemed to be cruising toward a second PGA success when he reached the turn in 35 following two birdies and a bogey, but a run of three bogeys in four holes from 11 to 14 saw him slip back and come under mounting pressure imposed by the chasing pack.
However, Bowditch closed his account with a 67 to finish nearest challenger to Bae, who becomes only the third South Korean to register more than one win on the Tour after K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang.
The impressive way that Bae went about securing his second Tour title also pulled into focus the player’s bag, which included Callaway Golf’s new Big Bertha V Series Driver, which has been a real force in helping players recapture their ailing form since the company introduced it last month.
Bowditch, however, wasn’t able to call upon his equipment to help him out as he bogeyed the eighth and picked the shot back up on nine as he looked unlikely to make any sort of tilt at the title on the front half.
