It’s all go for January after the R&A and USGA published their finalised Rules of Golf. So what’s coming in? Steve Carroll outlines the changes.
PING Golf Launch i25 Range
PING has unveiled its newest member to the family, the i25 woods and irons range; designed to offer incredible distance and forgiveness consistently for golfers of all ability.
The PING i25 driver and fairway woods have a distinguishing characteristic; patented racing stripes on the crown. The same width as a golf ball, the stripes offer a visual cue that can help aim the clubface more accurately, align the body to the target and assist in taking the golf club back on the correct path.
In order to optimise every performance when using PING’s i25 driver, fairway woods and hybrids, PING has engineered an industry-first shaft series that offers different weights and flex profiles without altering the clubs swing weight. Aptly abbreviated to PWR (“Performance, Weighting and Responsiveness), the shafts are matched to a particular golfer by the weight and flex that fits their swing and desired shot shape.
PING Golf i25 Driver
The i25 driver is packed with features, including two high-density tungsten weights in the rear of the sole to raise MOI and lower the CG to reduce spin for a flatter golf ball flight and landing angle which maximises roll out. PING make good use of their Turning Trajectory Technology, meaning standard lofts are adjustable +-1/2º. The lightweight, adjustable hosel maintains the same outer diameter and mass of PING’s more traditional fixed hosels and provides the player with benefits of adjustability without having to sacrifice on performance which is often lost in golf clubs with larger, bulkier designs.
PING Golf i25 Fairway Woods
If there’s one major change for the adjustable PING i25 fairway wood over its predecessor, then it’s surely what can be found in the face.
As reported by Tour players, they liked to see more clubface when hitting the golf ball from tight lies and the rough. This buoyed PING into making the face taller, thus enlarging the face and also adding the racing stripes to assist in that all-important alignment. A lower CG than the PING i20 model means golf balls speeds are given a boost while spin is largely reduced for better playoffs.
PING Golf i25 Irons
Like its predecessor, the 17-4 stainless steel i25 iron has progressive amounts of bounce, offset and CG as a player works through the set. On the cosmetic side of things, the new model is much cleaner, while also feeling slightly softer thanks to the implementing of a softer insert. Long irons are slightly larger to raise the MOI with a wider sole to assist the strike. The mid to short irons are more compact with thinner top lines and a narrower sole to encourage lower golf ball flight.
Furthermore, PING has added another element to the performance of its new irons range – dual stabilising bars. Narrow in the long irons and wider in the short irons, the narrow bars work to increase golf ball speed and spin for higher flight while the wide bars in the short irons reduce face deflection for lower flight and maximum control.
PING GOLF i25 Hybrids
PING has designed the new i25 hybrid golf clubs to be easier to align like an iron by introducing a much squarer leading edge on a more compact head. The 17-4 stainless steel face is also flatter without much bulge and roll to make shots easier to take control of. The hosel has been moved slightly forward – creating that high launch, low spin combination – while also making the gapping into the long irons easier as well. Progressive CG means the location moves lower and closer to the face as the loft increases to optimise trajectory.
“Our constant push for innovation continues to inspire technologies that help every type of golfer play better,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “The new metal woods and irons carry a common theme of increased distance but are engineered with the improved consistency, forgiveness and feel that we design into all PING clubs. Together with a proper fitting to determine the best combination of models, golfers can expect improved performance throughout their set.”
