Who has been voted best known golfer in the world?

The votes have been counted and verified, and Phil Mickelson is the world’s best known golfer and fifth most famous sports athlete, a survey carried out by ESPN has revealed.

Not Tiger Woods, who up until a few years ago, would have taken the majority vote with a bullet. And Rory McIlroy has also been overlooked as the most well-known player on the circuit.

The ranking was based on the combination of money garnered through endorsements, social media following and Google search popularity.

However, given Mickelson isn't even on social media, these findings could be considered questionable.

Of course golf fans know who Phil Mickelson is, but the non-golfing public? Do they really recognise Lefty more than, say, Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy? It’s certainly a head-scratcher.

ESPN’s Director of Analytics, Ben Alamar, explained the survey also takes information from ESPN journalists in Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

So, where did Tiger place?

Well, Tiger placed a very unsurprising second, ranking 10th in the list of world's famous sports athletes, while McIlroy came in third and 14th in the overall standings.

Other golfers to make the top 100 included Jordan Spieth (17), Dustin Johnson (43), Sergio Garcia (58), Rickie Fowler (62), Justin Rose (73), Jason Day (84), Bubba Watson (94) and Adam Scott (98).
