Titleist believe the new TS2 and TS3 drivers are the company’s fastest and longest yet – and by a distance. We put this claim to the test
WITB: Brooks Koepka – US Open
Check out the clubs which helped American Brooks Koepka to his maiden major title at Erin Hills.
We asked the question whether Brooks Koepka had an advantage over the rest of the field because he has a free pick of all the best equipment. He’s now the US Open champion.
TaylorMade poster boys Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson Jason Day must feel the added pressure and expectation heaped on them by the brand which pays them millions.
Whereas Koepka, who does have a clothing and shoe deal with Nike, is almost allowed to sneak under the radar with his pick n’ mix bag of equipment.
When Nike pulled out of the hardware game he quickly switched to the TaylorMade M2 driver and has stuck with it ever since.
He still uses the 2016 model so again, won’t be put under pressure to switch into the brand new product.
He stuck with the Nike Vapor Fly fairway woods for a while but has followed the likes of Johnson and McIlroy into the new TaylorMade M2 Tour 2017 3-wood.
There’s still the one Nike club in the bag which is a powerful Vapor Fly Pro driving iron.
Then he moves into the Mizuno JPX-900 Tour 4-PW irons. Who was the last player to win a major using Mizuno irons?
I first thought it was Nick Faldo at the Masters in 1996. But Tiger Woods actually played a mix of the MP-29 and MP-14 at the 1997 Masters.
Koepka – who was a Titleist staff player before moving to Nike – now plays a mix of Vokey wedges and relies on a Scotty Cameron putter.
I think there’s a lot to be said for remaining a free agent. You can change at any time, don’t have any added pressure and – if you win a major or two – you can just count the prize money…
